Jane Burton

Jane Burton was born in Brisbane, Queensland in 1966. After moving with her family to Tasmania in 1980s, Burton attended the Tasmanian School of Art, Hobart where in 1991 she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) and in 1993 received an Honorary Research Associate.

Burton’s first solo exhibition, The Sweetest Path, was held in 1991 with Contemporary Art Services Tasmania in Hobart, and travelled to the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne. In that same year her work was curated in the exhibition Lust, Plimsoll Gallery, Centre for the Arts, University of Tasmania. Further solo exhibitions have been held with Dickerson Gallery, Sydney and Melbourne (2000, ’01,’03,’04 and ’05); Crossley & Scott, Melbourne (2002); Bett Gallery, Hobart (2004); Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (2005), and the Johnston Gallery, Perth (2005).

In 1993 the artist was awarded the Lloyd Rees Travelling Scholarship and Residency, Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris. In 2003 Burton received an Arts Victoria Development Grant, and in 2005 an Australia Council Residency, London Studio.

The artist’s work is represented in several institutional collections including the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart, Artbank, National Gallery of Victoria, Newcastle Region Art Gallery, and the Monash Gallery of Art, Victoria.
