Henry Mulholland
Henry Mulholland was born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland in 1962 and migrated with his family to Australia in 1973. Upon arrival the family settled in Bowral, New South Wales and later in the 1980s the artist attended the National Art School, East Sydney Technical College, studying under John Peart and Tim Maguire.
Since graduating from the East Sydney Tech in 1988 Mulholland has exhibited his work widely, showing with Ray Hughes Gallery, Rex Irwin Art Dealer, Australian Galleries, and Heiser Gallery.
His work continues to be selected as a finalist and hung in national prizes including the Archibald Prize, AGNSW (1992, ’94, ’97, ’98, ’99, 2000, ’01, ’03, ’04); Wynne Prize, AGNSW (1990, ’92, ’93, 2003); Moët et Chandon Australian Art Fellowship (1993); Dobell Prize for Drawing, AGNSW (1989, 1994), and the Sulman Prize, AGNSW (1990), and has been curated in institutional exhibitions including Twenty Australian Artists, Galleria San Vidal, Venice, Italy & Queensland Art Gallery (1990); and It’s a guitar shaped world II, Tamworth City Art Gallery (1996).
Along with his exhibiting commitments Mulholland is a regular contributor on 702 ABC Sydney local radio reviewing exhibitions and commenting on the Sydney art scene.
Collections that hold the artist’s work include Artbank, Mr James O Fairfax, AO Collection, The Sir William Dobell Foundation, The Smorgon Family Collection, The Laverty Collection of Contemporary Art, University of New South Wales, University of Wollongong, News Limited and Conrad Treasury, Brisbane.
