John Peart

John Peart was born in Brisbane in 1945. After studies at the Brisbane Technical College he left the city in 1964 to live and work in Sydney, and in the late 1960s became recognized as one of the leading non figurative painters in Australia.

In 1968 he won a number of prizes including the Transfield Prize, and had his work curated in the influential exhibition The Field, National Gallery of Victoria & Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Returning from living and traveling abroad, Peart taught painting at the National Art School, Sydney between the years 1978 and 1986 and later between 1993 and 2002. In 1997 he won the Wynne Prize, AGNSW, and later in 2000 won the Sulman Prize, AGNSW.

The artist’s work is represented in collections Australia wide including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Queensland Art Gallery, National Gallery of Victoria, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
